Zara Tellander's album "Himmelens hatt" is an intriguing mixture of Swedish folk music, jazz and improvisation. A question she is asked often is whether it is folk music or jazz she is doing, and instead of giving an answer she poses a counter question: What do you think yourself?
Backing her up on this album is a band consisting of Johan Björklund, drums; Jacob Karlzon, piano; Johannes Lundberg, double bass; and Lisen Rylander, saxophone and bass clarinet. They are all part of the elite of Swedish jazz and improvisational musicians, and they have had a great deal of freedom of interpretation to make the music "their own" on this recording.
Zara was educated at the College of Music in Gothenburg, and still resides in the city. She has been active as a singer in the vocal group Envisa and in various jazz groups. She has also toured with the world-famous innovative circus Cirque du Soleil in Canada and in the US.
The Zara Tellander Band has been in existence to and fro since the 1990s, and with her from the start, as the only original member in the band besides Zara, is drummer Johan Björklund. He has worked with Bohuslän Big Band, his own group Mess, Änglaspel, and others. Pianist Jacob Karlzon is a big name in Swedish and European jazz circles, with several albums and a great many collaboration partners behind him. Lisen Rylander is the leader of her own quartet and has seen a lot success with her electronica duo Midaircondo, and works together with numerous musicians, including Anders Jormin, Daniel Lemma and Jeanette Lindström. Basist Johannes Lundberg has released two albums with his own band, Orca, and has played together with Billy Cobham, the Magnus Nyström Band, Lina Nyberg and others.
