"I swore I would never do a tribute album", said René Marie about her latest project, "I Wanna Be Evil (With Love To Eartha Kitt) in a recent radio interview. "But with a muse like Eartha, how can you go wrong?", prompted the DJ. Which made René laugh out loud and admit: "It was like another person was inhabiting me during those recordings. I even had to apologize to my husband several times: I don't know what's gotten into me, but I just had to go with it." The award winning singer and songwriter declares her eternal love for her inspirational idol Eartha Kitt, the "most exciting woman in the world" according to Orson Welles, with this always heartfelt and sometimes earthshaking album. Opening with a, well, devilish laugh and the words "they say that I'm a witch and that I weave a spell", this superbly sung and excellently produced ten-song collection features hits from Eartha Kitt's repertoire like "Santa Babay" and "C'est Si Bon", as well as not so well known should-be-classics like the title track or "I'd Rather Be Burned As A Witch", the aforementioned opener. The albums closer is called "Weekend" and tells the sensuous story of an unusual seduction. It was written by René Marie and is "kind of in the ball park of what Eartha might have done. Kind of risqué and all".

The recordings took place in early 2013 in New York with René's core trio consisting of Kevin Bales on piano, Elias Bailey on bass and Quentin Baxter on drums and percussion. "We hired a horn section and Etienne Charles did some beautiful horn arrangements", says René, who was happy to have these arrangements played in the studio by the wonderful Etienne Charles on trumpet, Wycliffe Gordon on trombone and Adrian Cunningham on tenor, clarinet and fl ute. The three horns - who also get to stretch out on solos - and the rhythm-trio create an organic and ever shifting world of sounds for René's vocal versatility, ranging from the delicate groove of an almost x-rated "Oh, John" via "Peel Me A Grape", which goes from a whisper to a scream and back, to sensationally swinging renditions of "I Wanna be Evil" or "I'd Rather Be Burned As A Witch". The musicians alternately sound like cohorts or sparring partners, like a small combo or a full big band, whatever the mood set by their leader requires - a winning combination and a marvelous way to revive the sexy spirit of Eartha Kitt. But be warned: repeated listening might make you want to be evil, too.
