"Ack Värmeland Du Sköna" in the classic recording with Stan Getz and Bengt Hallberg was an early, and decisive jazz impulse for Bertil "Jonas" Jonasson. He naturally chose the tenor sax as his instrument and his choice was confirmed when, towards the end of the 1950s, he moved from Dals-Ed where he grew up to the much larger town of Borås. There he found musicians that he could perform with, like pianist Åke Johansson and drummer Pelle Hultén; but, above all, he made friends with fellow tenor-sax player Erik Norström who continues to be a major source of inspiration.

Despite a promising start Jonas had relatively few opportunities to perform jazz. Interest in jazz was on the decline and Jonas had to earn a living as a busy dance-band musician, touring throughout Sweden.

By the beginning of the 1990s he had tired of life as a touring musician and in his hometown of Västerås - where he had been living since 1974 - he took every possible opportunity to play jazz. His beautiful and melodic performances on the tenor sax soon won him a reputation elsewhere in Sweden and he was increasingly in demand to play at clubs, concert halls and in churches.

During his many years as a dance-band musician Jonas had also performed on the baritone sax, but today it might well be regarded as his principal instrument. The reason for this was Lars Gullin whom he had, of course, always admired and listened to but whose unique baritone performances and compositions had now acquired a much greater importance in his musical life.

Jonas' first solo recording was "Turn Around", released in 2000 and this was followed, in 2002, by "It's True". The title melody was a composition by Lars Gullin whose song, "I Hope It's Spring For You" was included in his 2006 album.

Over the years Jonas has spiced his concerts with more and more compositions by Lars Gullin and his dream has been to record an album featuring Gullin exclusively. Now the dream has been realized. In "Jonas plays Lars Gullin" he is joined by his favourite musicians; Krister Palmquist [guitar], Kjell Öhman [piano], Hans Backenroth [bass] and Joakim Ekberg [drums]. Another much-admired colleague is trumpeter Jan Allan who lends an extra savour of Lars Gullin in two of the disc's twelve compositions.
