The American Pianists Association was founded in New York City in 1979 by Tony Habig and Victor Borge. Its mission is to discover and support young world-class pianists through competitions, performance tours and educational programs.
A rising star of his generation, Michael Sheppard is a pianist of dazzling virtuosity and penetrating musicianship. Trained at the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, he studied with the great Leon Fleisher. As a 2003 Classical Fellow of the American Pianists Association, he toured Southern Asia and the Middle East in collaboration with the Cultural Programs Division of the U.S. Department of State. Throughout the tour he played with national orchestras and resident chamber-music groups, gave solo recitals, master-classes, and private performances for the diplomatic community. Upon his return, he made his Kennedy Center début in Washington D.C. and has since performed throughout the United States. A native of Philadelphia, Michael Sheppard resides in Baltimore and appears frequently on the East Coast with his piano trio.
Michael Sheppard became Christel DeHaan Classical Fellow in 2003.
