...On Mozambique Relief various local musicians team up with Finnish keyboard-player Seppo Kantonen and producer/saxophonist Eero Koivistoinen. The music is a combination of local popular styles with clear influences from South Africa and a strong jazz element. Ghorwane are an electric band with their own horn section; Projecto Africa sound more rural, with marimba-like keyboards and earthy vocals; Stewart Sukuma and Jose Mucavele each sing over their acoustic guitars, accompanied by percussion; Zebra are a heavily percussive group with strong jazz riffs. Perhaps the most satisfying piece come from Gito Baloi who performs 'Danca Marrabenta', a take on the popular marrabenta rhythm, with its Brazilian-styled swing to it. But all the pieces are interesting, and the combination of the Finnish musicians' jazz talent with the Mozambicans' roots sound makes for an appealing variation from the few releases to have come from this region of Africa...
