OPUS REKOMMENDERARUuno Klami (1900-1961) belongs to one of the most clearly cosmopolitan figures of Finnish music after Sibelius. Klami's view of the Kalevala is closer to Stravinsky's paganism than to that of Finnish national romanticism.
Klami took rich influences from his student years in Paris and Vienna. Yet, these influences he handles in a way that is natural and convincing, blending them into his own musical language and personality.
This disc features some of Klami's most remarkable orchestral works; the colorful Kalevala Suite, folklorish Cheremissian Fantasy (for Cello and Orchestra), and the Respighian-style Northern Lights (Aurore Boréale), which is a wartime metaphor of human loneliness during a time of terror, and here recorded for the first time for commercial release.
