George Butterworth (1885–1916)
When George Butterworth, a lieutenant and acting company commander in the Durham Light Infantry, was shot by an alert German sniper in the early hours of 5th August 1916 on the Western Front, very few of his fellow officers and men had any notion of his stature as one of England’s most promising composers. It was typical of the man’s modesty that he left behind his growing reputation once he had enlisted. He had also, when home on leave, destroyed several of his music manuscripts which he considered to be of inferior standard. George Butterworth was born in Paddington, London on 21st July 1885 the only child of Alexander, a solicitor, and Julia, a trained coloratura soprano. Alexander’s promotion to general manager of the North Eastern Railway in 1891 led to the family’s move to York, which would be George’s base for much of his formative life. Educated in music initially by his mother and the local, Leipzig-trained Christian Padel, George was already a com - petent pianist by the time he entered Aysgarth Preparatory School, north of York, where he also learned the organ. From there he won a scholarship to Eton College, arriving in 1899 against the backdrop of the Boer War. After a sluggish start, he made dogged progress in his studies though excelled in music, under the tutelage of the young Thomas Dunhill, performing at the piano in school concerts and conducting his own compositions. In 1904 he arrived at Trinity College, Oxford where he read classics, though over the next four years would gradually spend more time on his musical activities than his formal studies, whether as pianist, composer, singer or conductor. In addition, through his fellow student Francis Jekyll, he quickly became involved in the folk song movement and would spend his summer holidays tramping the countryside with Jekyll and others, transcribing songs gathered from elderly people in village inns, farms and workhouses. It was inevit - able that he would thus meet and form close friendships with Cecil Sharp and Ralph Vaughan Wil liams, both passionate about the same cause. During his final two years at Oxford he was elected president of the influential Musical Club, where it was said he ruled with authority and, in Sir Hugh Allen’s words, was ‘impatient of humbug’.
