“By 1987, Domingo had 12 years' experience of singing the role and knew so well how to pace himself that all thought and feeling could be channelled into the characterisation, musical and dramatic. With the warm glow of his voice wonderfully preserved… the grief, the anger and tenderness now come fully within his expressive range. As Desdemona, Tomowa-Sintow may have too much of opera-house vibrancy and grandeur for the virginal innocence of the Love duet, but in Act 3, which in many ways is the most demanding, the strength of her voice is matched fully by the passionate conviction of her utterances... Mehta conducts firmly and with a sure feeling for quickenings and relaxation of tempo.”
