This disc brings together some of the highlights of Neeme Järvi's five-volume Wagner series with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. It includes a recording of the Overture to Der fliegende Holländer, not previously released. Here are the famous Preludes to the revolutionary tragic-romantic opera Tristan und Isolde and to Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and Act III of Lohengrin. The Overture to Wagner's first great romantic opera, Die Feen, and the Weber-inspired Overture composed in 1835 for the play Columbus by Theodor Apel are much less well known. Das Liebesverbot is perhaps the most Mediterranean-sounding of Wagner's operas, something especially apparent in the brimming vitality of the Overture, with its sparkling contributions of castanets, triangle, and tambourine.
