Schumann's Das Paradies und die Peri is a highly original form of a dramatic cantata for soloists, choir and orchestra, based on a tale from Lalla Rookh by Thomas Moore. The Peri is a creature from Persian Mythology. Expelled from Paradise the Peri tries to regain entrance by giving the gift that is most dear to heaven, the tear from the cheek of a repentant old sinner who has seen a child crying.
Schumann had great success with this large scale dramatic work, which has a continuous flow of music, without recitatives and arias. No wonder Wagner liked it greatly.
This recording from 1981 features the best vocal soloists of the former DDR, the Leipzig Rundfunk-Sinfonie-Orchester and conductor Wolf-Dieter Hauschild: another treasure from the archives of Berlin Classics!
