"Their imaginative, wide-ranging variations of tone colour unlock the music's romantic, atmospheric potential, and their command of genuine rubato - passionate, unimpeded forward motion followed by lingering backward glances - gives the sonatas an expressive flexibility that's surely authentic."
(Duncan Druce in "Gramophone" reviewing Carolin Widmann's ECM debut with the complete violin sonatas by Schumann with pianist Dénes Várjon)

- An exciting new record by youthful violinist Carolin Widmann, one of the most charismatic figures in contemorary music
- Intellectually demanding music played with the utmost vividness and energy

- Rarely heard masterpieces: four emotionally gripping works from the second half of the 20th century exploring most varied duo constellations

- A most illuminating view on the fundamental changes in cemtemporary music between 1950 and 1975

- Highly instructive liner notes by Rainer Peters in English and German

While she made her much-lauded ECM debut with a thought-provoking account of Schumann's violin sonatas last year, German violinist Carolin Widmann's reputation as a pioneering interpreter of contemporary music is spreading continiously. "The new record brings me back to my roots", says Widmann. Teaming up with Simon Lepper, one of Britain's foremost lied accompanists and a particularly fine chamber musician, she now presents a most varied spectrum of 20th century duo literature. "For more than a year we worked on the repertoire selection. We were looking for really strong pieces, both emotionally and with regard to compositional complexity." By exploring the acoustic and expressive conflicts between the stringed instrument and the well-tempered keyboard, all four masters are preoccupied with unconventional duo constellations. Schoenberg's late "Phantasy" of 1949 was conceived for solo violin with the highly complex "accompaniment" being added only afterwards, whereas Zimmermann's vigorous sonata (1950) was later elaobrated into a fully-fledged sonata (which Thomas Zehetmair plays on a Zimmermann disc released last autumn on ECM). Seperated, yet integral monologues mark the two experimental works from the mid-seventies in which dissimilar pacings, gestural and harmonic differences are examined in most fascinating ways. Uncomprominsing and fiery renderings make for adventurous listening experiences throughout.

Carolin Widmann was born in Munich and studied with Igor Ozim in Cologne, Michèle Auclair in Boston, and David Takeno in London. She won awards inter alia at the Kulenkampff Competition in Cologne (1999) and the Jeunesses Musicales in Belgrade (2001). In 2004 she was awarded the Belmont Prize by the Forberg-Schneider Foundation for her efforts on behalf of contemporary music. Since October 2006 she has held a professorship at the Musikhochschule in Leipzig. Ms. Widmann's programs combine the classical-romantic repertoire with the music of our own times and, recently, the Baroque age. Composers of the stature of Wolfgang Rihm, Matthias Pintscher, Jörg Widmann, and Erkki-Sven Tüür have written works for her. Her début CD with solo compositions by Eugène Ysaÿe, Pierre Boulez, Salvatore Sciarrino, and Jörg Widmann (2005) received the annual German Music Critics Prize. Ms. Widmann makes regular guest appearances at the festivals in Lucerne, Schleswig-Holstein, Aspen, Banff, and Davos. She also appears at the Strasbourg Musica Festival, the Berlin Festival, the Las Vegas Music Festival, the Jerusalem Chamber Music Festival, and the Heidelberg Spring Festival, where she served as artistic director of its atelier concerts in 2007. She has made solo appearances with Germany's radio symphony orchestras as well as the Bamberg Symphony, the London Sinfonietta, the Holland Radio Philharmonic, the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Symphony Chamber Ensemble, and the Copenhagen Collegium Musicum. Among the conductors she has worked with are Yehudi Menuhin, Peter Eötvös, Walter Weller, Jonathan Nott, Christoph Poppen, Peter Rundel, Stefan Asbury, Heinz Holliger, and Michael Schønwandt. Her duo with Dénes Várjon has been in existence since 2004.

Simon Lepper has established himself as one of the UK's leading piano accompanists performing regularly on BBC Radio 3 as well as at venues and festivals including the Wigmore Hall, Concertgebouw, Mozarteum, Verbier Festival and BBC Proms. He has given recitals with many of Britain's leading singers including Sally Matthews, Mark Padmore, Felicity Palmer, Joan Rodgers, Kate Royal, Bryn Terfel, Elizabeth Watts and Roderick Williams. His keen interest in chamber music has led to performances with clarinettists Julian Bliss and Jorg Widmann, violinists Renaud Capuçon, Chlöe Hanslip, and cellists Thomas Carroll, Daniel Müller-Schott and Gemma Rosefield. He was born in Kent, read music at King's College Cambridge and studied piano accompaniment with Michael Dussek at the Royal Academy of Music. Whilst a student he won every major award for piano accompaniment including the Gerald Moore Award and the accompanist prizes in the Kathleen Ferrier and Royal Overseas League competitions. He is an Associate of the Royal Academy and was recently appointed professor of piano accompaniment at the Royal College of Music, London.
