Liszt/Prokofiev - Piano Concertos - Salle, Lise de la (piano)
GRAMOPHONE EDITOR'S CHOICE / RECORDING OF THE MONTH"As has been remarked before, many times, in these pages, the number of superb young pianists seems to swell by the year, if not by the month. Yet, with all this competiton, for my money this disc sees Lise de la Salle jump ahead of the pack. Only Yevgeny Sudbin currently stands alongside her as a very special young talent. The imagination of her playing, the power that bursts through a tone so beautiful as to be almost painful to hear, is staggering. She never sacrifices line to volume, even in the most boisterous passages managing to find subtlety. And what expressive range – the touches of melancholy are as profound as the wit liberally sprinkled around all three pieces is infectious. Plenty of her rivals can master the notes just as well, precious few can approach her musical spirit. And the most exciting thing of it is that she is still, unbelievably, in her late teens – what, one wonders eagerly, is yet to come? Not that this is by any means a one-woman show. The sound places the soloist well within the wider orchestral tapestry and Lawrence Foster and his Gulbenkian Orchestra play supremely well, matching the pianist for passion and commitment. There is extremely fine and characterful trumpet work, too, from Gábor Boldoczki."
