Haydn, Joseph - Plays 18th Century Cello Concertos - Radutiu, Valentin
Valentin Radutiu, cello
Münchener Kammerorchester / Stephan Frucht
Joseph Haydn’s cello concertos are well-known staples of the cello literature. Unfortunately, he composed only two of them, which is why they are often coupled on CDs with cello concertos by other composers. The young cellist Valentin Radutiu, however, takes another approach: he combines Haydn’s C Major concerto with another 18thcentury concerto, by C. P. E. Bach, topping off with an arrangement for cello of Mozart’s Horn Concerto in E flat Major by the Spanish cello master Gaspar Cassadò (1897–1966), here receiving it's world première recording.
Valentin Radutiu was a pupil of Heinrich Schiff, Clemens Hagen and David Geringas – three of the most illustrious names in the cello world - and every single note of his beautiful, subtle playing is evidence of this excellent musical background. Accompanied by the Münchener Kammerorchester under conductor Stephan Frucht, Valentin Radutiu delivers exceptional performances. A further special feature is that the cadenzas for the Haydn concerto are by the composer Tobias PM Schneid and were composed especially for Radutiu. Built on Haydn’s motifs, these cadenzas develop into harmonically adventurous, expansive fantasies.
