Recorded in 1955
• This fabulous release presents one of Verdi’s most often performed operas, Rigoletto, sung by the ever-popular Maria Callas and an all-star supporting cast.
• As this disc testifies, and despite the wide tessitura, Rigoletto presents Callas with no technical problems, and she is able to accomplish the music easily and effortlessly.
• The recording is conducted by Tullio Serafin, who conducted a large number of Callas’s La Scala recordings. Although at the time not on the roster of artists at La Scala, he certainly proves his worth through the eloquent and idiomatic playing of his orchestra.
• Callas’s Naxos Historical recording of La Traviata (8.100300-01) proved a great success with critics: “This issue does have Maria Callas’s portrayal of Violetta recorded at her vocal prime and in reasonable sound… it is the only realistic choice if you wish to add her superb portrayal to your collection to go alongside whatever other versions you have.” MusicWeb
