When in 2008 Adriana Breukink began to experiment with the Eagle recorder, her aim was to build a recorder which could be used to play music in every style, and which would have a sound and a dynamic range suitable for playing also with modern instruments. In order to achieve this, the bore was increased from that of other recorders, which in turn necessitated the addition of keys to increase the range, which would otherwise have become quite limited. These keys include an octave key operated in a similar manner to that of the saxophone. In order to extend the range of the Eagle alto recorder further, an E foot was designed, giving the instru - ment a span of e'-c''', two octaves and a sixth. In 2011 the latest refinement to date was made, when a new metal labium was developed which facilitates the attack and makes the sound even stronger. Throughout this process, Adriana Breukink has collab orated with Geri Bollinger and Küng Blockflötenbau.
Chiel Meijering was born in 1954, and studied com position, percussion and piano at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. Setting out as a composer in the mid-1970s, he has produced more than 900 works to date, for almost every scoring imaginable. A main focus has been on music for small ensembles, often composed for renowned chamber groups, but since 2000 Meijering has also developed an interest in opera. His Alzheimer Opera, which was premièred in 2006 at the Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ in Amsterdam, marked his break through with a wider theatre audience, and was soon followed by operas such as Styx, Grenspost Zinnenwald and Blauwbaard.
