Mstislav Rostropovich, cello
English Chamber Orchestra
Benjamin Britten, conductor
Introduced to Britten through Shostakovich, his teacher, Rostropovich formed a close partnership with Britten, evident here in their collaborative performances from the opening concert of the new Snape Maltings Concert Hall, which includes rare audiovisual footage of the Maltings before it was destroyed by fire in 1969 and rebuilt. The DVD includes moving performances of Britten's Cello Suite No.3, which was inspired by Rostropovich himself, and the Villa-Lobos Bachianas Brasileiras No.1 in memory of the 1988 Armenian earthquake victims. Also wonderfully intimate bonus footage of Rostropovich performing the Sarabande and Bourrée from Bach's third cello suite. Rostropovich's CD and DVD recordings of the Bach suites on EMI are both key recordings and Penguin rosette winners. This is the first DVD release.
