AMC Classical's first compact disc dedicated to the pipe organ, the ’King of Instruments’, which includes works composed over six centuries, exploring the sonic possibilities of the historic instrument in the Cathedral of Bogotá, Colombia.
The release coincides with the ’Jubilee Year’ that Pope Francis has granted to the Cathedral of Bogotá as part of the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the present building. It is also considered to be the first professional recording of organ music made in this country and region, a milestone for the history of the instrument, its music, its performers and its audiences.
Like most of the historical, cultural, architectural, musical and literary heritage of Latin America, the organ at the Cathedral of Bogotá comes from Spain, where it was built around 1890 by the Catalan Aquilino Amezúa, builder of renowned instruments such as the one in the Cathedral of Seville, Spain.
Restored, enlarged and updated on several occasions, the most recent works were undertaken by Gerhard Grenzing, the Catalan builder of renowned instruments such as those in the National Auditorium of Music and the Almudena Cathedral at the Royal Palace of Madrid in Spain, as well as the organ of the Radio France Auditorium in Paris.
The quality of sound and the versatility of the instrument, together with the acoustics of Bogotá's Cathedral, create a multicoloured palette that enhances the greatness of the works, broadening the dimension of the repertoire chosen for this recording.
Works by José Jiménez (Spain, 17th century}, Johann Sebastian Bach (Germany 17th–18th centuries), Otto Olsson (Sweden, 20th century), Cesar Franck (Belgium 19th century), Eugène Gigout (France, 20th century) and Louis Vierne (France, 20th century) are masterfully ‘framed’ by the Magnificat Secundus Tonus by Gutierre Fernández Hidalgo (composed at the Cathedral of Bogotá in the 16th century) and contemporary improvisations by organist Juan de la Rubia (Spain, 21st century).
Juan de la Rubia, principal organist at the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain, is one of the most renowned concert performers of his generation; he performs regularly on major stages in Europe, the Far East and the Americas. One of his recordings, his ‘Cantatas Sagradas’ under the baton of Philippe Jaroussky, on the Erato label, was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2016.
Juan de la Rubia is professor at the ESMUC in Barcelona and member of the Sant Jordi Royal Academy of Fine Arts.
