• Svend Nielsen (b. 1937) is an important figure in Danish music. He has written an impressive body of work in the Romantic-Impressionist tradition, and as a composer he balances between the lyrical and the succinct. Vocal music is especially typical for Svend Nielsen. He has a deep interest in lyrical poetry and has set many Danish poems to music.
• This CD features Svend Nielsen’s most extensive vocal work Butterfly Valley, based on a famous sonnet cycle by the Danish poet Inger Christensen from 1991. The poem tells the incredible story of the life of a butterfly: from its larval state to its metamorphosis and short, winged life, and from childhood memory to a sense of approaching death. Thus Butterfly Valley also has the subtitle ”A requiem”, because it describes the gradual realization of the presence of death. It is poetic vocal chamber music that unfolds as a grand, sensual tour de force - a major work of contemporary Danish music.
• The Danish vocal ensemble Ars Nova Copenhagen and the Hungarian conductor Tamás Vetö perform in this extraordinary recording of Svend Nielsen’s exceptional work, making the impressive story of the butterfly come to life.
