Enja Records proudly releases Street Talk, by Saxophone Summit, a unit for which the description “super group” is an understatement. It’s Saxophone Summit’s fourth album since sax giants Michael Brecker, David Liebman and Joe Lovano first joined forces in 1999 to celebrate John Coltrane’s epochal late-career musical production. And Street Talk is the first Saxophone Summit album that includes alto saxophone icon Greg Osby, who joined the group for the summer tour that preceded this August 30, 2017 studio date. Osby replaced Ravi Coltrane, who had assumed the third tenor saxophone chair on the albums Seraphic Light (2008) and Visitation (2011) after Brecker’s death in 2007. As on each of Saxophone Summit’s aforementioned albums, pianist Phil Markowitz, bassist Cecil McBee, and drummer Billy Hart form an extraordinarily sensitive rhythm section that at once propels, coheres and complements the inspired flow of the three saxophonists, each an instantly recognizable voice. Liebman emphasizes the shamanistic Hart’s essential role, describing him as “an extreme storyteller and dramatist who can handle three to four solos and not have repetitions.” Rather than perform their heroic interpretations of Coltrane’s repertoire, which the musicians know, as author Ashley Kahn once wrote, “with a chapter-and-verse familiarity, Saxophone Summit performs an original composition by each member. “The Coltrane influence in Sax Summit is alive, but we’ve steered away from it on purpose as a representation of the group,” Liebman says. “We keep that spirit, and play tunes with that vibe or feel, but it’s our own music — our collective experience put together. We’ve each come up with a common basis while retaining an individuality that’s unique to each of us.” After an abstract introduction in which the horns interweave with polyphonic poise, Street Talk begins with the title track, a Lovano piece that debuted on his 1990 Blue Note debut, Landmark. After the composer’s opening tenor saxophone solo, Liebman (soprano saxophone) and Osby (alto saxophone) engage in a signifying conversation, followed by Markowitz’s turbulent piano statement and Hart’s own comments in exchanges with the unison horns. Hart is explosive on “Point,” a Markowitz composition that channels the spirits of Wayne Shorter and Andrew Hill. Liebman describes it as “an open, vampy feel with little snippets of melody interspersed into the vamps.” After Liebman’s dancing, stop-and-go solo in the style of his former employer Miles Davis, Lovano and Osby exchange erudite ideas, before the composer uncorks a percussive piano solo. Liebman opens “Loudly” — a loosely formulated contrafact of “Softly As In a Morning Sunrise” — with an a cappella soprano sax solo. The ensemble states the melody over Hart’s surging swing, atop which Liebman, Osby, Markowitz and Lovano gracefully navigate both Liebman’s and the original chord changes. McBee’s orotund introduction opens his “A Portrait,” a lovely melody with a sectional form and nice chord changes that stimulate solos by Liebman, Lovano and Markowitz. A rubato, atonal Osby-Markowitz duo opens Osby’s “Carousel,” then McBee and Hart put forth a staunch, subtle vamp over which the horns interweave, each addressing a different aspect of the melody. Hart’s forcefully imaginative drum chant opens his “Tolli’s Dance,” setting the rhythmic template for the lively album-ender, to which Osby, McBee and Liebman contribute solos. Clocking in at 45 minutes, not a wasted note in the mix, Street Talk leaves the listener wanting more — it’s a memorable, inspiring addition to this iconic unit’s distinguished discography.
