Arnold, Malcolm - String Quartets Nos. 1 and 2 - Maggini Quartet

• The death of Sir Malcolm Arnold in September 2006 signified the passing of a 20th century British music giant. Although better known for his nine Symphonies (all available individually on Naxos) and his film scores, Malcolm Arnold made a significant contribution to chamber music.
• The two string quartets on this CD form a fascinating contrast. The first comes early in Arnold’s career, whereas the second was written more than thirty years later, after he had established himself as one of the most successful British composers of his generation, and had entered into an increasingly unsettled domestic life which gave his music a tragic and often bitter resonance.
• The Maggini Quartet is a very highly esteemed chamber ensemble, and has received glowing reviews for some recent Naxos releases: “The British-based Maggini Quartet is a high-performance outfit… [they] play with total assurance….a classic of recorded chamber music.” Classics Today on 8.557394, “The Magginis are most accurate and cogent guides” Gramophone on 8.557396.
