Mieczyslaw Weinberg's works remained in the shadow of his great contemporary Dmitri Shostakovich for a long time, while highly appreciating the composing talents of his younger colleague. This single-disc collection features Weinberg's Symphonies Nos. 5 and 10, composed during the period of the composer's most intensive creative activity in the 1960s. The Fifth, rec. 1970, is philosophical, with a wealth of slow tempos; the Tenth, rec. 1975, one of the composer's creative peaks. Rudolf Barshai conducts the former, Kirill Kondrashin the latter; both were significant Weinberg popularizes.
