Before the siege of Leningrad began, Yuri Ahronovitch,
then a mere child, was to have been evacuated from the city.
The train taking the evacuees came under bombardment about 100 km outside Leningrad, and out of thousands of passengers, only 70 survived, among them the young Yuri. He made his way back to Leningrad on foot, the arduous trip taking him two months. By the time he returned, the siege was in full swing and he remained there until it was over, taking an active part, despite his tender age.
In 1943, he received a Military Medal for the Defence of Leningrad; a rarity for a young boy of 11 years of age.
The first time he heard Shostakovich's 7th (Leningrad) Symphony was in Leningrad during the siege itself. It made an enormous impression on him.
Years later, when he was working in collaboration with the composer on performances of this symphony, he told Shostakovich of the impression this war-time performance made on him and the composer was so moved that each time they worked together, he would make the young conductor repeat his tale.
Yuri Ahronovitch quotes:
".....This symphony is not merely the celebration of victory over Fascism; equally it celebrates the victory of good over evil, of humanism over obscurantism, of life over death...."
