Shostakovich, Dmitry - The Golden Age (Complete Ballet)(2 CD) - Royal Scottish National Orchestra

This is the first ever recording to present Shostakovich’s ballet The Golden Age complete, with all repeats observed, enabling listeners to assess the ballet in all its exhilarating, and, at times, anarchic intensity.
The three full-length ballet scores that Shostakovich wrote between 1925 and 1935 remain among his least known works. The Golden Age revolves around the visit of a Soviet football team to a Western city at the time of an industrial exhibition, only for their sporting and social endeavours constantly to be undermined by hostile administrators, decadent artistes and corrupt officials.
There also exists a Golden Age Suite, prepared by Shostakovich before the première of the ballet, available on Naxos 8553126. However, the excerpts which form the suite barely hint at the dissonant harmonies and intricate contrapuntal designs which can be found in the complete ballet available on this recording.
This disc showcases the talents of the acclaimed Royal Scottish National Orchestra under the baton of José Serebrier, hailed by Leopold Stokowski as "the greatest master of orchestral balance."
