Music for Women's Voices and Harp or Piano.
For their first recording on the Ligia label, Calliope, Voix de Femmes and their choirmistress, Régine Théodoresco, have decided to highlight some little-known works by the British composer Gustav Holst, who is famous the world over for his symphonic suite, "The Planets," composed between 1914 and 1917.
Following on from their previous monographs dedicated to Michael Haydn, Francis Poulenc and Florent Schmitt, rightfully lauded by the specialist press, they introduce us to these mature works by Holst (composed between 1910 and 1926). These were only truly rediscovered in the last few decades of the Twentieth Century.
These various sophisticated and bright pieces are striking for their brevity. If one knows how to listen out for it, Gustav Holst is talking to us about himself in them; his English culture with pure but characteristic melodies; his family roots with the choice of instruments accompanying the voices (harp and piano); his encounter with Hinduism; and about the modest man and the outstanding composer. Everything is expressed within the title of one of Seven Part-Songs entitled Sorrow and Joy. Holst brings us music of contrast and synthesis, virtuosity and simplicity, modernity and tradition.
As Régine Théodoresco puts it, "This music makes you feel radiant."
