"Flamenco and jazz are brothers," says pianist Daniel García, one of the most exciting voices of the new generation of Spanish jazz. "Both of them have similar characteristics: self-expression, complete devotion in the moment of making music and the deep experience at the moment." He brings to the point of what "Travesuras" tells: García dives deep into the music of his homeland and combines these influences the vocabulary of the modern jazz piano trio. The result is an independent and expressive music that combines rhythmic intensity with melodious richness, harmonic finesse and uncommon virtuosity.
Together with his longtime companions, bassist Reinier Elizarde "El Negrón" and drummer Michael Olivera, García ensures musical interaction at the highest level: "When we play, we try to listen to the 'intense listening' of the music we make, to concentrate. We are constantly exchanging information and reacting to it. It's like sculpting a sculpture in real time, a very intense experience, and we think we can let the audience participate in this intensity. "Spanish flutist Jorge Pardo joins the trio, a veteran of flamenco jazz, in two pieces. who also played with the Spanish music legends Paco de Lucía and Camarón de la Isla to Gerardo Núñez and Chano Domínguez.
Crucial to the musical development of García, born in Salamanca in 1983, was Danilo Pérez, Grammy-winning Panamanian jazz pianist, who was a teacher at Boston's Berklee College of Music and became a mentor: "Music is about truthfulness and self-knowledge , Only then can one penetrate deeper into things and find their own artistic expression. Danilo has shown me the way. "The success was not long in coming: in 2011 he received the award for the best jazz performance in Berklee. As a result, he played with well-known musicians such as Arturo Sandoval, Greg Osby and Perico Sambeat.
Occidental art music also paves the way for García's artistic career: Before leaving for the United States, he completed a classical piano education at the Castilla y León Conservatory in Salamanca, one of the country's best educational cities: "If jazz is about WAS, then classical music focuses on the HOW. And a good playing technique gives me the freedom to express exactly what I feel. "It is fascinating to hear how in García's music flashing cadences, harmonies and tones from Western art music, quite unexpectedly take a flamenco turn, in jazz Dissolve harmonies or lead to powerful improvisations. The four versions of "Dream of Mompou" based on the Musica Callada by Spanish composer Frederic Mompou are a direct reminder of classical music.
Flamenco, jazz, classical music. This is by no means all that dwells on musical substance in García, who calls himself an eclectic. He has studied rock, electronic music, middle-eastern music and Cuban music, even medieval music and Gregorian chants. "So much has influenced the Spanish culture and also left traces in me. Pieces like Vengo de moler and Travesuras reflect this development. "
"Travesuras" is anything but musical patchwork. Nothing sounds lined up here. Starting point for García's explorations are often flamenco-derived harmonic-rhythmic basic structures and melodic phrases: Thus one finds a solea in "Dream Of Miles", or a tango in "La Comunidad". "My goal is to transform the original Spanish music into a new context by means of improvisation and to make stylistic dividing lines invisible." In this sense, the album title should also be understood. A real equivalent for "Travesuras" does not know the German. It is the kind of innocent, naive behavior often seen in children who unknowingly discover the world. "A nice metaphor for what I'm trying to do: look at the music from a low-key perspective. Free yourself from conventions, let yourself drift and you'll see if there's anything new and interesting about it. "
