The music on this CD bears the fruit of two significant relationships in Boris Tchaikovsky's life: the artistic friendship between the composer and the violin virtuoso Victor Pikaizen; and the close familial bond between the composer and his father. The friendship with Pikaizen was forged in the early 1950s when Tchaikovsky, in his late 20s, was fresh out of the Moscow Conservatory, and Pikaizen, barely 20, was already a rising star on the international stage. Both men rose to the highest ranks of Russian music in their respective endeavors; and each maintained the deepest respect for each other's accomplishments. The current program pays tribute to the two major works that Tchaikovsky wrote for and dedicated to Pikaizen, the Violin Sonata of 1959 and the Violin Concerto of 1969, in performances that must be regarded as authoritative, inasmuch as the violinist in both works is Mr Pikaizen himself.
