Peter M. Hamel is a man with a mind of his own, a maverick, a cosmopolite.
One of his central concepts was, and continues to be, "harmonical" thought. By this he means a commitment on the part of the composer to unify heterogeneous elements, to transcend conflicts, even to achieve salvation by a new form of inter-cultural spirituality. (The religious dimension of Hamel's musical outlook should not be underestimated.) By striving for harmony, beauty and absence of conflict, Hamel calls attention to repressed material and unfinished projects on a new evolutionary level. Hamel's music became richer, more complex, more prone to conflict. He approached the of the avant-garde, but without abandoning his basic trust in the "harmonical".
