Friedemann Eichhorn, violin
Rolf-Dieter Arens, piano
Friedemann Eichhorn is a German violinist with the unique gift of projecting his talents into different musical idioms. That versatility was first demonstrated in the release of two successful discs of Tango arrangements, and now, his mastery of the late Romantic style is showcased once again in the concluding volume of Liszt's complete works for Violin and Piano. While generally not known as a composer of chamber music, Liszt wrote music for violin and piano throughout his career. While several pieces are arrangements of songs or works originally composed for piano solo, many are original compositions and explore the same stylistic explorations that can be found in Liszt's more famous compositions - including the use of folk materials, harmonic and melodic experimentations and cyclical forms.
The Yorkshire Post (UK) praised Eichorn's first volume of Liszt (HÄN CD 98.588), writing:
"Discovering virtuoso masterpieces is rare, even more so when they come from a very famous composer. The nine pieces represent about half of Liszt's output for violin and piano, ranging from the gypsy inspired 'Die drei Zigeuner', full of technical fireworks, to the imposing Grand Duo concertante. They are played with phenomenally clean articulation by Friedmann Eichhorn, his mix of technical fireworks with honey and cream tone fills the works with understanding. Wonderfully alive accompaniments from Rolf-Dieter Arens."
